What Is an Ignition Interlock Device?

If you get a DUI in Georgia, you will face a number of penalties, one of which may be being ordered to install an ignition interlock device in your car. Usually, first time DUI offenders will not be ordered to install an ignition interlock device in their car, unless their blood alcohol concentration, also called BAC, was significantly higher than the legal limit, they refused to take a BAC test, or in the presence of other aggravating circumstances. However, repeat offenders may be ordered to do so, regardless of the circumstances. Georgia DUI laws require those with two or more DUI convictions have an ignition interlock device installed in their car, with very few exceptions, and are prohibited from driving any vehicle not equipped with one.

Ignition interlock devices, IIDs, are installed into the ignition system of your car by a certified installation service. IIDs require you to provide a breath sample in order for the car to start, and will require “rolling” tests while your car is running. This sample must have little to no alcohol in it. If alcohol is detected, beyond the threshold programmed into the device, you will “fail” the test and must wait a certain period of time before attempting the test again. IIDs are installed at a cost to you, as the driver, to include an installation fee, a rental fee for the device and regular maintenance and calibration services. As such, the cost of installing an IID can be significant. You must show proof of installation in order for your Georgia driving privileges to be reinstated and you must maintain the device in your car for at least a year. IIDs are very hard to circumvent and all are equipped with computer chips to track whether each test was a pass or fail and if there were any attempts at removing or disengaging the system.
