Current Statistics On Shoplifting

Shoplifting is a type of theft in which a person takes retail merchandise without the intent of purchasing the item(s). According to the National Association for Shoplifting Prevention (NASP) there are staggering statistics surrounding the issue of shoplifting.

The NASP states that approximately 27 million shoplifters are in the United States today. Additionally, more than 10 million people have been caught shoplifting in the last five years. They also found that there is no particular profile for a shoplifter, both men and women participate equally as often. Approximately 25 percent are children and 75 are adults, and 55 percent of those adult shoplifters state that they started it in their teens.

The NASP also states that shoplifters say that they are only caught once in every 48 times that they take items without paying for them. There is such a thing as a professional shoplifter who steals primarily to resale or profit from the items stolen as a business. This “profession” makes up only three percent of shoplifters.

An article in BBC News states “It [shoplifting] is a genuine addiction that stems from the same issue as a gambling or drinking addition. These people shoplift because they feel compelled to act by their subconscious, rather than for financial gain.”
